BRAMPTON - Looking to help people kick the habit, Peel Public Health is providing free nicotine replacement products and counselling support to residents who want to quit smoking.

Dubbed STOP (Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients) the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), in collaboration with Peel Public Health will be holding treatment study sessions on Wednesday, Oct. 1 and Thursday, Oct. 2 in Brampton.

STOP is conducted across Ontario by researchers who evaluate the success of various types of smoking cessation supports.

The patch and inhaler are some of the nicotine replacement products available to participants.

"Peel Public Health continues to support this study because it gives people a chance to quit smoking," said Gayle Bursey, Peel's director of chronic disease and injury prevention. "Whether through nicotine replacement aids or counselling, we are prepared to help Peel residents be smoke free."

Peel Public Health also offers free quit-smoking clinics for Brampton residents.

Smokers receive one-to-one counselling and assistance from a public health nurse who will help create a customized quit-smoking plan tailored to specific goals and lifestyle.

Nicotine replacement products are not provided at clinics.

Smokers interested in butting out for good, should call Peel Public Health at 905-799-7700.
