BRAMPTON - Dietary fibre supplements help maintain a healthy lifestyle

(NC)-It is a well known fact that dietary fibre intake provides many health benefits. However, US studies show that average fibre intake for the American population is less than half the recommended levels. Doctor James W. Anderson, chair of the National Fiber Council agrees; more effective communication and education is required to enhance fibre consumption from foods and from supplements.

Fibre supplements, made with psyllium such as Metamucil powders and capsules plus calcium, can help lower mild to moderately elevated cholesterol levels. "Psyllium appears to be the most effective fibre supplement widely available for lowering LDL-cholesterol" says Dr. Anderson. He adds that "Psyllium fibre decreases serum LDL-cholesterol about 6%, thereby lowering risk for CHD about 9%". Recently, Health Canada has approved Metamucil's psyllium fibre powder supplement as an effective cholesterol-lowering supplement because of its significant effects on lowering LDL cholesterol.

Dietary sources of fibre contribute vitamins, minerals, water and a variety of phytonutrients. However, fibre supplements may have an important role for helping some individuals achieve fibre intakes approaching the recommended 21-38 grams per day.

More information on cholesterol lowering can be found online at www.metamucil.ca.
