The provincial government is giving Peel region $2.6 million to help cover the salaries of additional police officers.
The money is the government's share of annual salary costs for 221 additional front-line officers hired by Peel Regional Police Service. It is the second in an installment of funding for the 2007/2008 fiscal year.
Ontario's Liberal government has promised $68 million in annual funding to help communities pay salary related costs for more than 2,000 additional police officers across the province.
"Community safety remains a key priority for the McGuinty government," Brampton West MPP Vic Dhillon said in a news release. "I am pleased that the government is continuing to support policing in Brampton as part of our commitment to help fund 2,000 police officers in communities across Ontario."
