BRAMPTON - Conestoga Public School Grade 3 student Gary (Gursewak) Chohan's teacher describes him as shy and quiet. He does not often vocalize his thoughts. However, earlier this year, he became fascinated with Terry Fox during the school's participation in the annual fundraising run for cancer research.
The 8-year-old was an active participant in the run with other students and also decided to sacrifice all his recesses on the day of the fundraiser to run outside on his own as a personal tribute to Terry Fox.
When Gary came inside, staff had to force him to eat and drink. He was refusing food and water out of respect for the marathon Terry Fox ran decades ago to benefit cancer research.
The Terry Fox T-shirt Gary was given for his fundraising efforts has already been worn out, his teacher said.
In the true spirit of the Marathon of Hope, the Grade 3 student's efforts were not done to seek personal recognition or attention. His enthusiasm was inspiring. He was truly touched by the story of a Canadian hero, his teacher Nyma Choudhary said.
