BRAMPTON -

On Oct. 3, Grade 11 and 12 students in the Leadership Class at St. Marguerite d'Youville Secondary School organized a fundraising event for an organization called World Hope Cambodia. Headed by teacher Jeff McCloskey, the students were eager to make a big impact on the small organization and the lives of 20 Cambodian orphans.

A desire to make a major difference for these orphans overseas spurred the efforts of local teenagers, who organized a charity walk-a-thon and gathered tremendous support from schoolmates. The school walk-a-thon, called S.O.S (Salvation over Selfishness) - Impact 20, collected more than $19,200 in three days.

Students took to the streets in the early morning hours to walk the 5-km route with an unwavering excitement and enthusiasm. Photographed are students Rosalyn Alessi, Beatrice Anane-Bediakoh, Trudy-Ann Chambers, Jadyn Coombs-James, Eunice Dappah, Nick Galloro, Mairead Keith, Kristin Lee, Ashley McIlwrick, Andrew Oliveira, Emmanuel Owusu, Carlton Roberts, Manny Sahota, Brittany Sloan, Joseph Triumbari, Corey van Deemter, Anne Vu and Erin McPhee, along with teachers Jeff McCloskey and Mike O'Toole.

World Hope Cambodia is dedicated to supporting 20 orphans in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. These 20 children were rescued from "tent city," a garbage dump that serves as home for thousands in Cambodia's capital. All proceeds from the fundraiser went directly to World Hope Cambodia, which supports the orphans in all aspects of life, including shelter, clothes, food, electricity and education.

Thanks to the huge success of "Impact 20" the orphanage is guaranteed the funding to keep operating for a year.
